South Africa Kaalpenny (1900) With Rim NGC Certified.

Interesting and scarce.

Pretoria mint, KM-Unl., Hern-Z63. Variety with rim.

Likely issued in the field as payment to soldiers when the Boers were fleeing the British troops during the Anglo-Boer War.

As the Boers were fleeing the English invasion into the ZAR, they took with them their gold, blank planchets and coin press. During the war, coins were issued in the field and as there was no time to stamp the coins, they were given out blank to the soldiers. There are blank coins in the following denominations: 1 penny with and without rim, 3 pence, 6 pence, half crown, half pound, pound with and without rim.
